Every year for the past 2 years, Beta-I has been putting together this event, the Lisbon Investment Summit, for investors, entrepreneurs and all those interested in pushing the Portuguese startup scene forward. They have a strong community to back them up, disruptive startups to showcase and an inspiring youth with a restless mentality who’d rather think of game-changing ideas than settling for comfortable.

I was invited to speak for NUMA and introduce the take-aways of the White Paper published last May, following the European Accelerator Summit that happened in December 2014. About 150 accelerators gathered from all over the world to discuss about their next challenges. Here are the main trends that to sum-up:

Pre-acceleration: Takeaway is that this phase is really primarily about educating people about entrepreneurship and building the ecosystem in general

Verticalization: This is representative of a more specialized shift underway in the sector. However making this shift requires accelerators, who want to narrow their focus to a specific vertical, to prepare a certain set of skills and types of networks before making the transition

Changing corporate – accelerator relationship: Where previously corporates either served as more ‘hands off’ financial contributors to accelerators or ‘competitors’ (with their own, separate corpaccelerators), they starting to work in more of a partnership, collaborative fashion. This is a win-win for both

International Expansion and accelerator networks: Increasingly accelerators are stronger together than they are apart. Accelerator networks are serving as key actors in not only helping strengthen this visibility, operations and positioning of accelerators in their networks, but also for startups looking to expand globally.

The Evolving Business Model: See question above on the various ways that accelerators can monetize. However the principal conclusion was that for most accelerators, a ‘full-stack’ acceleration model which incorporates several of the above monetization approaches is likely to be the most promising way for accelerators to assure a sustainable business model.
